PGA Catalunya Resort debuts its new vineyard to create exclusive wines for guests and homeowners
PGA Catalunya Resort is enhancing its status as one of Europe’s leading luxury golf and lifestyle destinations by creating a new, on-site vineyard, Celler Mas Hereu, which will eventually see the European Tour Destination produce its own wine.
Surrounded by some of the most celebrated wine regions in Spain, including DO Empordá, DO Alella y and DO Penedés, PGA Catalunya Resort - already renowned for the quality of its highly acclaimed Stadium and Tour golf courses - benefits from a favourable climate, rolling landscape and perfect soil conditions to enable high-quality wine production.
In the first phase of planting, carefully selected vine varieties, clones and rootstocks (two varieties of white grape and one red) will include Chardonnay and Xarel lo, a local white variety with an aromatic expression and versatility. The red grape, Garnatxa Negra, is a local, rustic assortment from the Empordà region that stands out for its fragrant nose as well as its capacity to produce aged wines.

“Golfers continue to recognise PGA Catalunya Resort as the home of Spain’s no.1 golf experience, the Stadium Course,” commented David Plana, CEO of PGA Catalunya Resort. “However, our proximity to such celebrated wine regions, combined with the gastronomic heritage of the Costa Brava, has meant that connoisseurs of life's finer pleasures have been making PGA Catalunya Resort a must-visit destination.”
Deriving from the name of an ancient farmhouse that previously occupied the land, Celler Mas Hereu seeks to recover the old Catalan tradition of family wine production for own consumption, creating wines for resort clients and residents.
The new project will also enable vine adoption possibilities for homeowners, as well as grape picking and wine workshops for all guests at PGA Catalunya Resort and Hotel Camiral, Girona’s only five-star hotel and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World network.
David concluded: “The estate’s expansive countryside is enabling us to extend our offering of sporting and leisure activities, and we hope our new vineyard will further enhance the resort experience for visitors and residents.”
The development of Celler Mas Hereu is part of PGA Catalunya Resort’s ongoing three-year, €53 million development program. Plans include the addition of new sporting facilities, including an equestrian centre, a man-made recreational lake and an adjoining beach club.

About PGA Catalunya Resort: Opened in 1999, PGA Catalunya Resort quickly established an international reputation for outstanding quality. The Stadium Course is ranked the number one golf course in Spain by the Top100golfcourses.com website and Golf World magazine, which also recognises the venue in its World Top 100 Courses.
The 36-hole resort, a European Tour Destination, is conveniently situated close to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (five-minute drive) and Barcelona International Airport (one-hour drive). The recently completed high-speed train line that links Girona (approximately 15 kilometres from PGA Catalunya Resort) to the rest of Spain and Europe, provides even faster connections to major cities, including Barcelona, which can now be reached in only 37 minutes.
